Handmade by Forrest Anne Bencivenga

Handcrafted ceramics of whimsical grandeur.

“The pots I create reflect the enjoyment I have for throwing and handbuilding. From the rhythmic movement of wedging the clay, to the first contact of wet hands on the spinning mound, to peeking into a cooling kiln door; each step of the process is rewarding, challenging, and ever-changing. I enjoy experimenting with a variety of surfaces and forms, and strive to follow the natural path of the material. My work is primarily functional- mugs, bowls, vases, and serving dishes. I like to think of my pieces being loved and used; eagerly passed around the dinner table or being affectionately held in someone's hands. I use both wheel thrown and handbuilding techniques depending on my focus. My most recent work is a series of whimsical vessels with tree bark textures and hand sculpted mushrooms. This work was inspired by all of the beautiful fungi popping through the wet woods during the rainy summer. Finding almost every color of the rainbow, I brought a basket of mushrooms to my studio where I worked to recreate the forms. I studied the textures and intricacies and was inspired to put them into clay.”
